Casualties

In December 2022, there were two incidents of explosive weapon use recorded in Burkina Faso, one of which resulted in 15 civilian casualties, 10 of whom were killed and five injured. Civilians accounted for 68% of all 22 casualties, as seven armed-actor casualties were also recorded, two of whom were killed and five injured.

On 25 December 2022, 10 civilians were killed and five injured when a roadside bomb detonated, hitting a civilian bus near Bougui, Est region.

In November 2022, there were no incidents of explosive weapon use recorded in Burkina Faso which resulted in civilian casualties. Five armed-actor casualties were recorded.

On 25 November 2022, four soldiers were killed and one was injured in a roadside bomb blast in Djibo.

In September 2022, there were three incidents of explosive weapon use recorded in Burkina Faso, two of which resulted in 76 civilian casualties, 35 of whom were killed and 41 injured. Civilians accounted for 97% of all 78 casualties, as two armed actors were also killed.

The highest casualty incident occurred on 05 September 2022, when 35 civilians were killed and at least 37 injured in Soum, in a roadside IED explosion on a supply convoy heading to Ouagadougou.

Casualties

In August 2022, there were three incidents of explosive weapon use recorded in Burkina Faso, one of which resulted in 39 civilian casualties, 30 of whom were killed and nine injured. Civilians accounted for 68% of all 57 casualties, as 18 armed actor casualties were also recorded, 17 of whom were killed and one injured.

On 01 August 2022, 30 civilians were killed and nine injured in a drone strike by Burkina Faso armed forces targeting jihadists, between Kompienga and Pognoa villages.

In July 2022, there were two incidents of explosive weapon use recorded in Burkina Faso which resulted in seven civilian casualties, all of whom were killed. There were no armed-actor casualties from explosive weapon use recorded in Burkina Faso in July.

The highest casualty incident occurred on 01 July 2022, when four civilians were killed when their bike struck an IED while traveling from Djibo to Ouagadougou, Bourzanga.

In May 2022, there was one incident of explosive weapon use recorded in Burkina Faso which resulted in 10 armed-actor casualties, all of whom were killed. There were no civilian casualties from explosive weapons recorded in Burkina Faso in May.

On 26 May 2022, 10 jihadist militants were killed in a military airstrike, in Soum.

Casualties

In April 2022, there was one recorded incident of explosive weapon use in Burkina Faso, which resulted in 36 civilian casualties, of whom six were killed and 30 injured. Nine armed-actor casualties were also recorded, all of whom died. 

On 24 April 2022, nine soldiers and six civilians were killed, and 30 civilians were injured, in two suicide attacks by the Katibat Macina militant group, in Burkina Faso’s Soum region. The militants were targeting state armed actors.

In February 2022, there were no recorded civilian casualties of explosive weapon use in Burkina Faso. There was one recorded incident of explosive weapon use on 07 February 2022, in which 40 armed-actors were killed by a French airstrike in northern Burkina Faso.

In January 2022, there were no recorded civilian casualties of explosive weapon use in Burkina Faso. There was one recorded incident of explosive weapon use on 19 January 2022, when four French armed-actors were injured by an IED blast in northern Burkina Faso.

In December 2021, there were no recorded civilian casualties of explosive weapon use in Burkina Faso. There was one recorded incident of explosive weapon use which caused 13 armed-actor casualties. On 13 December 2021, four Burkinabe soldiers were killed and nine others wounded when their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Komandjari province.

Casualties

In October 2021, there were no recorded civilian casualties of explosive weapon use in Burkina Faso. There were, however, two recorded incidents of IED use that caused four armed-actor fatalities. Both attacks took place in the Cascades region, one in Larabin and the other in Farakorosso. Both incidents took place on roads and killed two soldiers in each attack.

September 2021

Casualties

There was one incident of explosive weapon use in Burkina Faso in September 2021, resulting in 13 armed-actor casualties. There were no civilian casualties recorded this month. On 12 September, six armed actors were killed and seven injured in a roadside bomb attack by unknown, non-state actors on a convoy returning from a gold mine in Sakoani, Gourma. The attack also involved the use of firearms.
