Casualties

In October 2022, there were four recorded incidents of explosive weapon use in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, three of which resulted in 18 civilian casualties, eight of whom were killed and 10 injured. Civilian casualties included at least one woman and one child. Civilians accounted for all but two of all 20 recorded casualties, as two armed actors were also injured in October. 

The highest casualty incident occurred on 03 October 2022, when 10 civilians, including children and teenagers, were injured in an IED explosion at a cinema in Butembo, North Kivy.

Casualties

In September 2022, there was one recorded incident of explosive weapon use in the Democratic Republic of the Congo which resulted in one civilian injury. One armed actor was also injured. 

On 06 September 2022, one intelligence agent and one civilian were injured in a remote-detonated IED explosion outside the national intelligence agency in Butembo, North Kivu. Authorities suspect that the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) are behind the attack.

In June 2022, there were two recorded incidents of explosive weapon use in the Democratic Republic of Congo, one of which resulted in three civilian casualties, two of whom were killed and one injured. All three casualties were children. Civilians accounted for 30% of all 10 casualties, as two armed actors were also killed and five injured.

Education

On 10 June 2022 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, artillery shells allegedly fired by the Rwandan army from Rwandan territory hit the school Institut Saint Gilbert in Rutshuru territory, North Kivu province, killing two boys.

In April 2022, there was one recorded incident of explosive weapon use in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which resulted in nine civilian casualties, six of whom were killed and three injured. Two armed actors were also killed. 

On 7 April 2022, grenade blasts targeting a bar in a military camp in Goma killed six civilians and two soldiers. A further three civilians were injured. The perpetrators, assumed to be non-state actors, are unknown.

In February 2022 there was one recorded incident of explosive weapon use in the Democratic Republic of Congo. On 5 February, four civilians were injured when an IED was detonated in a busy market in Beni, North Kivu. There were no recorded armed-actor casualties.

Casualties

In December 2021, there was one recorded incident of explosive weapon use in the Democratic Republic of Congo that resulted in 22 civilian casualties (including one child), including eight killed and 14 injured. One armed actor, a suicide bomber, was also killed.  

On 25 December, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive at the entrance of a crowded bar in Beni, North Kivu, killing himself, eight others, including two women and a teenage girl, and injuring at least 14 others.

June 2021

On 27 June 2021, there were four casualties from explosive weapon use in the DRC as a result of twin attacks in Beni, North Kivu. Two women were in injured by a bomb blast inside a Catholic church, and a suicide bomber affiliated with ISIS was killed detonating his device in a busy intersection in Beni, also killing one civilian.
